The Eelstritch is a small, semi aquatic omnivore native to swampy and marshy areas. Its appearance combines traits of an emu or ostrich, but with slick, moistened scales instead of feathers. A notable feature is its secondary jaw, much like that of a moray eel, used for catching prey. It has a long neck, four eyes, and is covered in dark teal, water-resistant scales.

Habitat & Range:

Primarily found in Southern Swamps, Marshlands of the Western Peninsula, and various wetlands across Keri'Keri Islands, the Eelstritch thrives in nectar-rich waters. They nest in shallow, marshy ponds or along riverbanks, creating burrows or utilizing dense undergrowth for protection.

Diet & Behaviour:

An omnivore, the Eelstritch feeds on a variety of swamp flora and fauna, from small fish and amphibians to nectar-rich plants and fruits. Using its sharp teeth and secondary jaw, it snatches up prey with ease. Despite its small size, it is territorial and will defend nesting waters against intruders. However, it is a social species, often found in small groups. When domesticated, they can be farmed for meat, eggs, and occasionally their scales, provided they are given sufficient nesting waters.

Reproduction:
During mating season, males use vocalizations and display behaviours, including flaring out their scaled frills, to attract females. After mating, females lay clutches of 3-6 eggs in communal nests near water. Eggs hatch within 4-5 weeks, and the young are independent after just a few months.

The Eelstritch plays an important role in maintaining the swamp ecosystem by controlling the populations of smaller animals and promoting plant diversity.
